Electrical Insulation Material Meets Requirements of Electric Vehicle Battery Covers | Car Battery Insulator
June 04,2016
ITW Formex® announced the suitability of its Formex™ brand electrical insulation material for electric-vehicle battery applications. Automotive battery insulator covers made from Formex polypropylene electrical car battery insulation meet the demanding requirements of electric vehicle design and manufacture.
Battery systems in electric vehicles stand up to demanding environmental, mechanical, and chemical requirements while emphasizing safety and weight reduction. The battery insulator material chosen for automotive battery covers must be lightweight, inexpensive, flame retardant, and meet rigorous electrical barrier and insulation requirements. To reduce OEM costs under maintenance service agreements, the car battery insulation material must be strong and serve reliably.
Formex™ electrical insulator material meets all of these requirements. However, unlike materials that need to be molded into parts, Formex™ is easily and economically formed into complex three-dimensional parts by die-cutting, scoring, and bending. Its long-term thermal aging capabilities have been long recognized in other applications making it ideal for reliable service in automotive environments. In addition, Formex is resistant to most battery chemistries.
Formex™ delivers superior performance in comparison to other electrically insulating materials such as aramid paper. Aramid paper absorbs significantly more moisture, is not as dimensionally stable, is more expensive, and does not provide score and fold capabilities. Because Formex™ is a better electrical battery insulator, a thinner product can be used which will reduce weight.
